You need to have “Google Apps for Education” activated to have access to Classroom. Every state and catholic school and system in NSW has this already in place but very few regions have it activated.
You can set up your own domain quite easily for your school. It only costs about $25 a year and will be activated in about 3 weeks. My school of 200 has 2,000 logins - plenty of room for growth. Each student and teacher gets 30G of space, email, apps etc. I have already mentioned the advantages of Google Apps for Education elsewhere so I won’t go into the details here. My main aspect here is how “Classroom” can be utilised for ipad use.
Many classes using iPads are finding they don’t really need a lot of apps that aren’t already on it (especially for older students- upper Primary/ Secondary). The issues around iPads tend to be how to store material off the ipad, link material (in it’s native form) to the teacher or to share the ipad with numerous students. Google Classroom can assist in this area.
Have a look at the attached video, which shows how a teacher can set assignments in Classroom and then students can respond to these using a variety of apps. The ones shown are iMovie, Explain Everything, Notability and Book Creator. They can be uploaded to classroom in their native format. Very handy for shared ipads.
The video takes about 10 minutes.
